Aw! Is there any way you could incubate some of the hen's eggs? Her eggs can still be fertile 4+ weeks after the rooster is gone.

Not a chance. That hen hasn't laid an egg in the 1.5+ years I've had her. The rooster never bred her, either.
It's a lose-lose situation in every way. I've spent money on him and never got more than $3 back from him.

So sorry to hear about your rooster. With the purple comb, it could have been a heart attack, and nothing to do with the water.

I will say that I do keep 3 waterers . One inside, and two outside because I am absolutely paranoid of them knocking over a waterer or getting locked inside or outside the coop.

That is how I have my waterers for my layer flock. With my bantam's tractor, it only allows enough space for one waterer.

My current setup uses a rabbit water dish that hangs on the side.

Guys. I'm shook.

My brother just found my only rooster dead in his tractor coop. He was in perfect body condition and was fine yesterday. I hadn't been outside yet today but gave him food and water yesterday.
I don't understand what happened.

He was supposed to go to fair, too. And he was my breeder so there's that.

Purple comb means lack of oxygen too, could be from the heart not working properly.
This guy showed zero signs of respiratory illness correct?


We can guess all day long but a necropsy will give you an answer.

I hate to admit it but I think it was accidental dehydration
I haven't been out since 4pm yesterday and their water was dry when I went to get the body. It wasn't even above 55°F today.

I feel like crap. The hen is okay which is why I think it was human error.

So sorry.

Don't beat yourself up, my chicks are still using the chick waterer and they knock it over regularly, we are in the 90's here most days. Yesterday I was out most of the day and came home to knocked over waterer, have no idea when they knocked it over. But they all drank a long time when I refilled it!
