My 2 month old Rhode Island reds arrived yesterday 10 of them. I have a large chicken tractor that I placed them in. Do I have to place them in the upstairs coop at night myself or will they learn this themselves ? [IMG]

Not quite sure what you mean by upstairs coop? Do you mean will they go up the ladder and go inside in the evening? Most will do that instinctively, but some may need to be taught that the coop is their home. You can teach them that the coop is their home by closing them up in the coop (with food and water) for a couple of days. If you're referring to the roosting bars where they sleep, most chickens will automatically get up on the roosting bars to spend the night but some won't...for those that won't, you'll have to train them by placing them on the roosting bars when it's evening.

    Hope that helps!

G’Day from down under ckjohn [IMG] Welcome!

I agree, after a couple of nights of you showing them where to roost they will get the hang of it.

Good luck with your new feathered friends.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends [IMG]
