Hi, all. We bought 3 Red Stars that were sold as five months old on July 17th. One of them started laying about a month later, but the other two are still not doing a thing. Getting red as can be in the comb/wattles, but no eggs. They're in a roomy coop/run, don't seem stressed, and eat like anything. The one layer started squatting a few days before she started laying, but the other two still run when you go to pick them up. Next week will be 8 months old on these hens.

Could the breeder have been mistaken on the age, or do Red Stars wait until eight months to lay?

Thanks!

Richard

Shortening days could be playing into it. Each bird is an individual and don't always follow breed standards for laying. I wouldn't worry too much if they appear healthy and happy. I am still waiting for my last 2 girls to start.
