Well, the insanity has started for 2010! I will be hatching around 40 chicks every 2 weeks for a couple of months and we'll see how long I keep it up for. I'm trying to get a fair amount of chicks from each of 3 family lines. This first batch was 20 chicks.. only 4 keepers

Because of this large amount & constant staggered schedule I had to employ this plastic tub as a hatcher. I have 2 styro bators but both are busy as I'm hatching one family in one tub and another family in another while the incubator is still going. I have 2 tubs ready for when i have 3 families at once. It requires constant maintenance through the hatch because it's a fair bit dry even with a humidifier in the room running for the last 2 days. I had to keep wetting chicks while they were trying to zip. But all but 1 made it out fine otherwise.. surprise surprise.

My first hatch was smaller than normal because one of the families got loose and I had to discard eggs for a few weeks, but we're ready to set some in the next group. There are 3 from one family and 1 from the other family. Everyone has been toe punched to protect their true identiy

I'm SO HAPPY that even 4 of the first 20 hatched are looking ANYTHING like what I'm headed toward. It's still a long road ahead but it's exciting to see SOME progress!

and here... here are my first 4 splash babies!!! I've been trying over a year to get splash but have failed. I finally have 4 lovely little guys & gals.

Thanks!!

Can you believe this... first I only have 3 PAIRS to go with in this generation, to produce these hundreds of chicks.
First one gets loose with my aussie rooster so I have to wait 3 weeks to start collecting her eggs

Now that time is up and we are collecting

when one of the OTHER hens decides it's time to GO BROODY!!!

I took away her nest box because she didn't lay an egg yesterday so I may already be too late.

) But I'm sure the waiting is the hard part! Like you get these great plans on how to do it, and then just wait for the chickens to cooperate lol Tell that missy that the australian accent isn't all its cracked up to be
