I've been reading about blackhead in turkeys. I have a 3 month old that needs medication. I have 2 tablets of 250 mg metronidazle. Could you please tell me how much I need to give my turkey? I've read about adult birds but I can't find anything about 3 month old turkey and the dosage. I want to start this ASAP. Thanks.

I haven't used that medication, but until you find out how much to give please give him cayenne pepper.

Mix a heaping teaspoon of cayenne pepper into a half cup of water and shoot approx 5 ccs down his throat once every other day for a week. Also mix a tablespoon of cayenne per 10 lbs of feed to dose all the birds. This works if you have caught it early enough. Good luck!

Quote:Thanks, I have given her cayenne pepper and plan on giving her more. I put some in scrambled eggs which she did eat some of them. I will put it in water tomorrow and give it to her as well. I hope someone can give me measurements for the medication and in US terms rather then metric.

Quote:Ivan3, thank you so much. I have the turkey sitting on my lap as I read this. She thanks you. I'm going to go with 1/4 tab since she is under 5 lbs and the fact that it's 250 mg.

Quote:Mine free range with the chickens. I don't have any of my chickens, ducks geese, turkeys, guineas penned up other then at night. Turkeys and guineas do not get penned at all. The turkeys really don't hang out with the chickens.

I hope you know chickens are carriers of blackhead disease but suffer no ill effects from it and the ground is now infected with the blackhead virus. The rule is never put your Turkeys on the same ground as chickens, many folks do and many folks also wonder why they have Blackhead, some claim their turkeys don't get Blackhead from ranging with their chickens but my guess is when the turkeys do die they really don't know about blackhead. IMO

Not to highjack this thread but what about putting Chickens on the ground where Turkeys used to be, chickens will follow the Turkeys about 2 or three months apart. Thanks
