Hi all,
I'm new to chicks, and could use some help. We got 3 day-old chicks almost 3 weeks ago. About 10 days ago, one (Jane) started to seem sick and weak. She first wouldn't stand up, and since then lays down sideways. I don't think it's straddle leg, and i'm not sure what to do. We are thinking of putting her out of her misery soon.

She moves around by pushing herself forward on her chest, and will eat and drink. However, she's now so much smaller than the other 2, and they will eat any food put in front of her, and step on her, etc. She peeps alot. Her poo is mainly normal, maybe a little runny. I've been giving her poly-vi-sol (no iron) and eggs, and all the chicks seem to really like nutritional yeast sprinkled on whatever they eat. She's skin & bones, her fluff & feathers are un-preened, and she seems miserable.

Any suggestions? Is she heal-able?

Well, the only thing I can think to do for her is give her vitamins/electrolites in her drinking water, and feed her by hand and maybe give her some finely chopped boiled egg......you could try this while watching TV and holding the chick (on a rag of course)....give it some TLC. Maybe even some duramayacin in her drinking water, although if all the other chicks are fine, I wouldn't think it was some sort of infection, but it's always a good idea to isolate a sick chick. I would just see if she responds to what I suggested, and if not, I'm sorry to say you're right....you should cull her.

Good luck with the chick.....
