You do have to be a Border's Rewards member. I don't think you have to pay to be one, like you do at Barnes & Noble ($25). I've got the Border's one, I've told B&N I won't pay them to be 'loyal'.

I've got a Border's reward card, even though I'm not a big book buyer! My brother recently gave me $35 cert there. I paired it with a 25% off coupon, checked out the clearance racks, and went home with:
1. garden journal/book of days... and egg tracker, lol ($6.99 clearance)
2. a canning cookbook I had checked out from the library and used like crazy ($22.95 - 25%)
3. $7.58 balance on the card!

Woohoo!

I even returned the library book.
