4 Chickens in Westchester, NY

I'm looking to start raising chickens for eggs - and am interested in only 4 chickens in the Westchester area of NY. What are the best type of chickens to get? Any recommendations? I would prefer to not order the chicks online and have them shipped in the mail.

If you are looking for just prolific layers, I would say Golden Comets. An egg a day once they get to the 5 month age. If you want a variety of colored eggs you could go with Ameraucana or Easter Eggers [blue, green, pink, ivory], Marans [dark chocolate], Australorps [brown] huge eggs as in extra, extra large.

I wonder about the mail order...is it because of the amount needed to be purchased at one time? In MHO, mail order or ordering through a farm supply store is the best if you can get the Marek's vaccination. Just buying from someone, chances are they don't bother with that and you may be setting yourself up for heartbreak later on. Please do your homework and know what to look for. Ask to see the breeders stock and evaluate how they are kept and their overall appearance. Best of luck!
