Hi!
We just got our first ever chicks - 12 Delawares - from a hatchery 4 weeks ago. We've noticed that a few of the birds have some sores on their feet and aren't sure what to make of them. We noticed the sores about a week ago. Since then, we have moved them from their original brooder (a large rubber made tub) to a larger enclosure in our basement - concrete floor covered with about 3 inches of pine shavings and enclosed with chicken wire. Aside from the sores, they seem to be doing well. All are eating and drinking, poop seems normal (to us - first time doing this, so we don't have much to compare to), They are all active and alert. The chicken in the picture is the one with the worst sores, by far. It is also the biggest of the bunch and has started developing comb & wattles. Any ideas what may be causing the problem and what we should do about it?

Thanks!
Amanda

It appears that they are "picking" on eachother. It is not uncommon for this to happen. As for what to do about it, I am unsure other than segregartaing the ones with the sores till they heal. When chickens see sore/scabs they just zero in on them and peck.....Hope that helps.
