Our newspaper "50 years ago" item:

"U. S. Revenue agents found a large illegal whiskey still operation near Newport, Tenn. It was disguised in a chicken house, along with a number of chickens going about their business. Two 800-gallon and two 500-gallon cookers were in use. It was one of the largest illegal operations ever found in east Tennessee." Aren't chicken people clever!

Today in many places we'd have to hide the hen house in the moonshiner's hut...

Please make me smart. Why is it illegal (even now) to have a whiskey still? I found a kit to make beer in the pharmacy, so obviously that is legal, but why is the whiskey thing not then? Thanks!

Illegal because I think that moonshine's strength is unpredictable..bad batch of moonshine can make you blind or even kill you outright. I watched a show on it on the discovery channel. It had an old moonshiner that still did his own without electricity and even drove an ancient model t.. he has no teeth left and was probably illegally driving but he got on TV..
