I picked up 6 bantam gold laced cochins on 4/6. So they're now about 6.5 weeks old. A lot of the cochin cockerels I've had in the past have been pretty quick to make themselves known. I'm not seeing any definite cockerels in this group...but I couldn't be lucky enough to get 6/6 pullets from a straight run group, could I?

Also, does a chick that bites (not pecks, but BITES and holds on) normally indicate a cockerel? I've been moving them outside during the days if it's warm and dry, and a couple of these would run over and bite me as I'm picking up other chicks and they chirp in distress because I've grabbed them. 🤣

I've circled the 6 cochins in the pics. There's also a NN and a California grey mixed in there.

I likely just need to give it another 2-3 weeks, and it'll become more obvious...but have you ever had a month-old chick bite and hang on in defense of its flock-mates?

I'm wondering what that will mean for its adult temperament, lol.

What I think I see is this one being a cockerel along with 6... could you get more pics of 6? @Overo Mare, agree with me or no? ☺️

Color on the pics is super washed out. Op, did you use the zoom on your phone cam when you took these?

I don't want to say yes or no before seeing better pics, but these two are the ones I suspect if I suspect any. I can't see that Gray's face, but that color looks male.

It's just been very gray and drizzly here for the past week+. I've been working on swamping out a couple of coops and pens and adding sand to help with mud and drainage. Here are close-up pics. They were not cooperative, and I didn't realize #1 was so blurry until I got inside, sorry...and now determining which one that was might be fun.

I'd say 6 is a cockerel, but I'd expect more development by now. Looks like the development of a 4 week old cockerel, so may just be a super early developing pullet.

Post updated pics of that one in a few weeks.

And yes, one of my 2 California Greys is a bit suspicious. They were supposed to be pullets, but everyone knows how that goes. I think they've got some Leghorn genetics, which leads to larger combs, but we'll see...

Here are some pics of them. I've got a heat lamp on in the chick coop because the sand is damp, and some of them decided that makes it a day at the beach and time to go sunning. The first pics are with the light on for context for their positions, and the last pics are with it off so the color isn't distorted. The suspicious chick has a large comb, but it is very yellow for now.

They weren't thrilled with me for interrupting their sunning time, lol.

They're 7 weeks too? Both pullets. That one pic made it look really light.
