My BO hatched out 8 EE chicks 8 weeks ago. I am hoping for at least half hens, but it seems like they are all fighting and challenging each other. Only one has a larger redder comb so far. What are my chances for some hens?

    7/1 (hens/cockerels) and you'll have been lucky.
Even hens fight (staring each other out/jumping/head pecking) each other to establish a pecking order.
I'm not sure with EE chicks but 8 weeks is probably too early to tell for sure.

50/50 is the most likely outcome but it's easy in one small clutch to have 7/1, 6/2 or 5/3 (either way).... even 8/0 is possible.

etc : corrected my bad math and shoddy spelling

Quote:Yeah, that sounds like them. What really concerns me is when two of them are at it and the feathers around their necks get all puffed up. Reminds me of the two roosters I used to have. I hope its just establishing the pecking order like you said. Thanks for the reply!
