Hey everyone! I’m new to raising chickens. We have 6 eight week old pullets. We let them free range for a little every day (supervised due to predators in our area) and this evening I noticed one of the chickens eyes is swollen, red, and almost looks like she’s missing some feathers around it. I don’t see any eye bubbles or other symptoms.

Any help would be appreciated!

(the first photo is the swollen eye and the 2nd photo is her good eye. )

I'm sorry, your photos are not showing up, can you re-post them?

From your description of a red/swollen eye with possibly some feathers missing around the face - I would take a guess she got into a squabble and was pecked or scratched in the eye.

General care for eye swelling/injuries is clean/flush the eye with saline and apply an eye ointment like Terramycin or Vetericyn eye gel. You can also use Plain Neosporin in the eye.

Watch that she's eating/drinking.

Thank you! Here is a photo of her eye. I was hoping that’s all it was so I cleaned it as best she’d let me and put some neosporin on it last night. Thanks for your help!

It looks like she may have a small scab beside the eye. I would give it a couple of days to see if it improves. Apply your Neosporin 1-2X a day.

If it gets worse or you see other symptoms - bubbles in the eyes, runny nose, coughing, etc. then let us know.

She's sweet!
