A Brinsea Experience

I bought The Brinsea Ovation Advance 28 incubator as a replacement to our first incubator. The first time I used it I checked it's calibration before setting and it was 0.1 degree off, which is not bad at all. I had set 15 Icelandic eggs and 5 Marans. We had a 100% hatch rate.

The second time I used this machine, about 8 days after the first hatch, on day 5 of the second hatch the fan started acting up, it began turning itself off (the fan not the machine) and the "high temperature alarm" kept going off. I checked the internal temperature and it was 31.3. I lost that setting of eggs.

I emailed Brinsea about this and got a standanrd / cursory reply saying they would speak to technical about it.. That unfortunately was a Friday of a long weekend in England. I didn't know about the long weekend and emailed again on Monday and Tuesday. (getting more and more frustrated)

Tuesday, I got a call from England. John from Brinsea was calling to talk to me about the issue. I explained and he told me what he felt the issue was. He said that recently they had had a few similar issues with faulty fans. He gave me the option of having a replacement fan sent with installation instructions or a new machine sent. (I am not technical so he had their importer send me a new machine that day).

I wanted to write about this for others because - the machine is quite expensive ($400) and for the price I expect it to run for a long time without issue. I accept that this isn't always the case and when it isn't - as was my experience - I REALLY appreciate the personal interaction I got with John and that they immediately suggested replacing my machine. That engagement and action changed me from a VERY unhappy customer to a loyal one. I wish more companies took this approach.

Anyhow. I am now waiting for my delivery and looking for eggs!! Fingers crossed for another good hatch.

That's terrible that you lost all those eggs. I have a couple brinsea incubators but not the new ones. Maybe they are still getting the kinks worked out with them. On one hatch during hatch time with pips and zips going on, I realized that the temperature had plummeted way down. The fan was still running but the heater went. I quickly switched all the eggs over to another incubator....thankfully I had another one with room. The company did the same or similar. I didn't email but I called them on Monday, spoke to someone right away and I sent it in and they repaired it and sent it back. I have not had any further issues. They are a pretty good company! Also you can't beat a 3 year full warranty!

You are 100% correct, the 3 year warranty is quite amazing. I was half expecting it to be quite difficult to get the replacement but they were really cool. It may be that they are working out kinks, i had not thought of that.. either way, I'm expecting the new one to arrive Friday. Now i am trawling the Norwegian chicken group pages for eggs! lol

just saw this post, and just got off the phone with Brinsea. I am also having serious fan issues with my ovation 28 ex model. Unfortunately, i am in the middle of a lock down and I'll be surprised if any of my eggs make it. The person I spoke to said that they are having issues with their fans and they are going to ship me a new fan, which is a step in the right direction, but I'm very upset as I had special eggs in there. Grrrrrr. I may also request a new incubator. :barnie

oh man, that is rough! I truly feel for you. YES you should try and get a new machine instead. Mine arrived about 6 days after they sent it which i expected and I did lose my eggs. I also noticed that it is the same batch as the one that had the fan issue... which scares me since I am about to pick up eggs sunday.

let me know how hatch goes, sending positive vibes!!

they sent me a new fan which works fine. i lost all my eggs though...they were developed - two pipped but that was it. one thing that happened is there was a bunch of water that was sitting on the bottom since the fan wasn't running properly. I think the unit wasn't registering heat/humidity properly and the machine was constantly pumping water in. I'm very upset.......

I'd be upset too. Hopefully your next hatch goes well!

Thanks, Jacqueline! :) I am getting a new incubator from them - as long as it's running well, their hatch rate is amazing. I noticed that their prices are going down a bit too. I'm sure there were just a few kinks since this was a new model. My advise is if anyone is concerned about how their fan is working, call them!

Could someone explain what it means on the digital display for RH when it says 20% EX only. Mine is the Ovation Advance 28. NOT the EX

Only on the ex will it adjust RH automatically. All other models you will have to add water manually to raise RH. First thing to do it plug it in and turn it on and don't add anything for 24 hours. Then read temp and RH. That is kind of your base RH for the room it's in.our base RH is fine for the 1st 18 days. Then our machine 28ex add water on its own.
