A different kind of dog food issue

Jax and Kane are german shepherds. They share a sire and their dams are sisters. Jax takes after his dam. Kane takes after the sire, and especially their grandsire.
There's a gap of time before we got Jax and after he left the breeders (from 8 weeks to 13 weeks) when he was with his original owner and didn't get very good care. He was fed whatever was on special at the farmer's co-op.
Our vet is very satisfied with what I am feeding them. She's not too keen on feeding yogurt, but as Jax has no problems with it, she's left that up to us.
I feed them seperate, so there's no way for Kane to dominate Jax at mealtime. I did take the gate seperating them at mealtimes too soon the other night and Kane walked right over and took a drumstick out of Jax's mouth. Jax let him.

Maybe you're thinking about the "4health" food marketed by TSC? I compared the ingredients in it to the Diamond Naturals for Large Breed puppies and they are identical. The Naturals is a bit cheaper though @ 40 lbs. for $31.99, vs. 35 lbs. for $29.99 for the 4health. And the TSC doesn't have a 4health formula for large breed puppies, just a regular puppy formula.

I hear ya on the shedding. Jax doesn't shed as bad, a nightly brushing keeps it under control. Kane is losing his puppy coat in hand-sized clumps. Both boys have beautiful coats.

TSC - the one here, anyway - carries Taste of the Wild, which is an exceptionally good food - I think that's the one somebody earlier was referring to that Diamond made.

Personally, I cook most of what our dogs here eat (both retired show dogs) chicken, brown rice, veggies (broccoli, green beans, sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, squash--it varies depending on what the garden has or what I find) - the kibble we use when we use one, is Wellness Super Five mix- it happens to be carried at a livestock supply much closer to us than the TSC that carries TOTW, which is why I feed that one. My dogs were raised on Newman's Natural Balance - but cant' get that here. My dogs have no allergies or skin issues so that's the one that works best for us. Also mix in cottage or riccota cheese, eggs, fish, etc - depending on what the 'people' are eating.

That's it! Taste of the wild. They also have a grain free. We tried Sampson on it, but he did better on the blue buffalo. I haven't seen it anywhere but tractor supply, so I wasn't sure if that was only thru them.

Oh how I would love to be able to afford to feed them the Taste of the Wild. Realistically though, it's just too expensive for our budget.

I feed my house dog, an 80+ pound husky mix Taste of the Wild and she's done great on it. I switched her to it because of her allergies. She eats much less of it and I still had to which her from the bison to the salmon because she was putting on too much weight. It's an "all age" feed so the next dog I get will be on it from the beginning. My two outside dogs I feed Diamond Natural Lamb & Rice and they do well on it. Taste of the Wild is made by Diamond. Part of it may very well be their age.....I think all puppies hit that gawky "teen-ager" stretch where no matter what they look thin.
