We got back from church yesterday around 5pm.
As we were passing the house next to ours, we saw the cow and older calf that live in our subdivision.
Mama was peeking out from behind the house, and the calf had just crossed the road.

After parking, I went through and got the egg basket.
Went out the back door as usual, and thank goodness, I looked over to my left first, as big mama was making her way to the chicken coop as well.

As a side note, our chickens are very indignant every time the moose do this. They are a riot to watch, clustered around the fence, necks straining and voices at full volume!

Anyways, I ran back in to get dh, and he grabbed his pistol to escort me out to the coop, as mama was standing just a few feet from the gate.
(our neighbors cut down a tree right there, and left all the branches, so she was intent on munching on them)
Thankfully, she scooted around the corner and waited for us to finish gathering eggs on the other side of the fence.
Temps are almost 20 below, so I had to get them gathered, as around five, they are all done laying, so none of the eggs are sat on after 5pm.
Otherwise, I would have just waited her out.

Oh, and prior to all this, dh was feeding and watering the chickens before we left for church,
and did it all under the watchful eye of the calf, who was bedded down just a few feet away, chewing her cud )

Ummmm, hello?!!! You absolutely cannot tell us a cool story like this and not provide pictures. I'm just sayin'. Why are we not also grabbing the camera when we grab the pistol?

My oldest friend lives outside of Anchorage and is forever sending my pictures of the moose in her yard. So very neat!

I do have some awsome footage of her defending her calf against the neighbor dog, but I'll not be sharing it right now.
We had to call the troopers on that, because the dog was allowed to run llose and harrass the moose all it wanted.
If it happens again, I have the evidence for the court.
I will keep an eye out and try and get soem footage of the chickens defending there coop, LOL!
