A Newbie from Australia

Hi all! I've just joined and I'm in Australia on the NE coast.I've got 3 New Hampshire Reds, and they are noisy as all hell!
Has anyone had a problem with getting the girls to accept black sunflower seeds in a bowl?Mine absolutely freak if they see them, I think they look a bit like a black snake to them They will eat them sprinkled on the ground, but they are still very wary of them.
