I have been raising my chicks for officially two weeks today (they are three weeks old). They have been kept in my room next to my baseboard heater with a heat lamp. Well. At night I've had to unplug the lamp and cover their tote with a blanket. And they have been doing amazing. They don't even fuss for long. They seem to be making a lot of noise for the first ten minutes trying to get each other to huddle up. But after that they are content and silent. And with the occasional pleasure trills only at night, dare I say, happy? Just tonight I saw they were getting too warm for the heat lamp. So I might be weaning them early? They are already pretty well feathered and I noticed some panting. Especially from my Barred Rock.
I've lived on a mountain in an rv where our only heat source for the chicks were our gas stove or propane heater. And even then. Either not very close or on the lowest possible setting So. I'm not too surprised about this. But. If you have a baseboard heater, then it adds more warmth to them than you think!
I posted this just because it might interest some of you out there.
But of course always listen to your chicks. If they are too cold they will let you know clearly. But, experiment with other brood set ups! Mine is working perfectly for them apparently. And they are strong and happy birds
