My 2 year old Orpington recently was on sulfatrim for two weeks due to a suspected liver infection. It’s been a week since her last dose. She has since resumed laying (last egg two days ago). Her poop for the last week has been like this. Black and very liquidy, but still contains urate. Is this normal or is she bleeding?? It has also been in the 90s here and she’s clearly stressed. These were taken from overnight. Do chickens still lay eggs if they’re sick?

What did the fecal test tell? Any worms or coccidiosis? What made the vet think it was a liver infection? What were her symptoms? Is there any enlargement of her lower belly between the legs? Is her tail position up or down? Hens can lay eggs when sick.

Can you make sure that she is getting probiotics for awhile to get her gut bacteria back in order? Probios powder from feed stores, Gro2Max online, and Purina Fortiflora (sold by vets) are commercial ones. Plain greek yogurt or buttermilk have some as well.

Fecal at the time was negative (3 weeks ago) She presented with jaundice and the vet could feel an enlarged liver. After antibiotics both symptoms returned to normal. She didn’t lay for the whole period, but has since restarted with 2 shell-less eggs and 4 normal eggs. She is active and eating/drinking. I just gave her a scrambled egg this morning and she was alllll over it. Her weight has dropped however from 2960g last week to 2770g today. She normally doesn’t tolerate the heat very well, so I’ve been adding nutridrench this entire summer.
