Greetings. I have some acidified copper sulfate on hand, because I wanted to use it to treat sour crop a couple years ago. My chickens didn’t like it. Anyway, a couple of the birds my flock have yellow urates, and in my search around the web for what might be causing it, I learned that it’s possible acidified copper sulfate might lead to gout. Does anyone know much about this? Like I said, my flight doesn’t like it, so I’m not really used it. But I found it interesting, and if it’s true, it’s something users should know about. I may spend more time researching another time, but right now I’m looking into helping my flock with their possible kidney issue.

Yellow urates can be common with liver problems. I have seen them a few times with ascites or reproductive problems, but early fatty liver disease would also be a possible cause. The thing is, we don’t usually know a cause until later when a necropsy can be done. I have never used acidified copper sulfate, and about the only thing I would recommend it for would be for prevention of canker in a canker positive flock.
