We had 28 fertile eggs in the incubator and they are hatching now, right on time. We also have a broody hen. We put her in her own pen a few days ago and gave her 5 of the 28 eggs. Two chicks already hatched with her but one died IN the box and the other right outside the box. I'm guessing the one got squished and the other got cold ... it got out of the box but couldn't get back in I guess??? The hen was obviously stressed (but prior to the deaths she was content). I took the dead ones out and put the remaining three back into the incubator. What to do now? I'm thinking we'll remove the nest box and she can just have a nest right on the floor. Once a few chicks are dry I'll put them with her ... if that goes well I'll put more with her .... unless you have a better idea? Suggestions please! Thank you!
