To start, I have three ducks that have been living with each other for a year, one male and two females. They are all medium large ducks, very happy and busy. I have just picked up two new one year old muskavee ducks, who are a smaller breed, and brought them home three days ago. The first day the original ducks didnt interact with the new ducks much, kinda walked watched each other. The second day, about half way through the day and into the third day, the male started to pay too much attention to the new ducks. He does the usual hold them down and aggressively mate with the smaller muscovees. I'm used to the usual rough duck mating butnhe dosent ever give one of the newer ducks a chance to exist. Hes mated with her 10 times in the last 20 minutes and shes lost all of her neck feathers. Is there some course of action to keep her alive and the group togeather or will it take some more brutal human intervention? We have him separated from the others now but space for storing ducks is at a premium, and really need them to coexist in a large enclosed I have built for overnighting them away from pests.

Mallard based ducks mate more often and vigorously than muscovy. I personally would either remove the drake or separate out the species. I think @Miss Lydia keeps both, so maybe she can be more helpful.

That's what I was dreading. I really dont have alot of options to where I keep them so seperation is a really difficult thing to do. I guess I wait and hope she can give me some insight or if you are indeed correct, I'll probably be rid of the poor guy.

First off I’d have separated the muscovies in a see not touch pen so your drake and females could get to know each other without mating. Maybe you can section off part of your enclosure so your drake has time out. Many on here have to do this to keep their drakes from abusing their females. That way he can still be with the females but can’t abuse.
