My new rooster "Iago" is very aggressive. I've tried all the usual tactics and so far the only thing that works is a water pistol. Am I going to always have to be "packing a pistol" (actually a toy ray gun) or is there another method? I know he is only doing his job and hope he'll be a great guardian of the girls when the local foxes, hawks and fishers come a calling, but my concern is when I need to have some one else take care of the hens. Thoughts?

Is it a Rhode Island Red? They are notorious for being jerks.

http://hubpages.com/hub/Taming-Wild-Roosters I found this the other day, but I'm not sure if anyone here has tried it. It sounds like it would be worth a shot!

I also see a lot of people recommending you either carry the rooster around for a day and basically humiliate him in front of his hens, or that you give him a good hard kick when he comes at you.

The other thing I see recommended quite often is to make some chicken soup.

I vote soup. There are many many many more mannerly roosters available to replace him, most likely free of charge to you. In my experience roosters are good at sounding the alarm when predators threaten, but aren't to be relied upon to protect & defend. It's up to you to build them a safe coop. It's not worth the bother having to defend yourself from an aggressive rooster on a daily basis.

is a great link from rooster-red about dealing with aggressive roosters. You shouldn't kick any bird, since their bones are so fragile. If spurring is a problem, you could file them down so they aren't as sharp. And, this may sound stupid, but if you "crow" and "flap your wings" (meaning wave your arms around) sometimes that helps too. My late rooster was spurring my mom and she tried this tactic, and only then did he back off. Just a few things you could try. Good luck!
