Hi Everybody!
I'm new to this site and am just starting out with chickens. Can you use alfalfa straw in the nesting boxes or would pine shavings be a better choice? Sorry for my ignorance.

I found straw (wheat straw) is wayyy better than shavings to me. The birds would push the shavings out more and the shavings are a lot duster. Straw works better in brooders for me too

So glad you could join our community!

Definitely go with the straw or some sort of grass hay. The birds will make more of a bowl nest out of the hay and it stays put better. Shavings get kicked out too easily.

Make yourself at home her and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask around the forums.

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!
