my neighboring county does it like yours. wierd that you have to show a pair. And yes for the most part its how much you know, although part of the judging is quality/condition of the bird,

I dont think he could be shown in conformation but he could defenetly be shown in showmanship.
Ive been in the waterfowl project for 6+ years and many times I have shown mixed breed ducks.
I was the champion junior waterfowl showman at the Nova Scotia provincial 4-H show two years in a row and I was showing a khaki X drake the first year I won. He was the friendliest duck I ever had.

At the fair last year someone had a white crested drake with a lot of brown feathers in him and he had angelwing and there was a lot more better white crested ducks than that one
