I use to raise every type of gamebird before enlisted n the Army. I come home from Iraq an how stupid this might sound, my birds saved my life in a way. I was always depressed, suicidal, an extreme alcoholic. I couldn't stop the horrible thoughts of things I was forced to do an forced to see. After shrapnel tearing my leg into pieces it became a living nightmare. No amount of meds or therapy help. After discharging from the Army I thought I'm gonna start raising gamebirds as did before I enlisted because the gave me much joy Bak than. An I was correct. My birds helped me heal mentally. So I have Chukars, Jumbo Wisconsin Bob White's, Butler Bob's, Mexican Speckled Bob's an my favorite Bob's, Snowflakes from Kenny, the discoverer of the Snowflake Bob. I'm wanting to train one or two of my Chukars to become my pet( service animal, lol ). Can anyone help with the knowledge I need to do this ??? Thank u

    Welcome to BYC.
Are you asking how one would be able to 'registar' a bird as a service animal?

I'm not sure that's possible but anyways be can call their birds 'therapy' animals.

Your story is amazing. I'm glad you have found something that keeps you going. My husband lost his brother overseas in Afghanistan and this farm life we have created has helped him a lot in dealing with it.

Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! I find birds of all kinds to be amazing healers. I moved to the country to heal from grief and found life in birds, so I got chickens. In the beginning they were the reason I got out of bed in the morning. Now, 4 years later, they are just more spoiled pets that live here. :D I hope you will find peace and healing through your chickens, and can definitely see them as therapy service birds.

Thank you so much for serving this country. You have sacrificed so much. I hope you will find this site is a bit of therapy too. At the very least, it provides a little comic relief and companionship each day.

    :welcome

People get into raising birds for all sorts of reasons, a lot of them for some of the same reasons you mention. There is something therapeutic about birds, I'm glad you have been able to get back to raising them.

Make yourself at home here and thank you for joining us!
