I had 5 baby (about 3 weeks old) bantam chickens in a large box inside an extremely large dog kennel. The night before last two of them were dead. One we never found and the other we found a few feet away under our push lawn mower. The whole front of her was skinned and just bloody skin was showing. So I figured they somehow flew out of the box and squeezed through the bars. So I went to lowes and bought the smallest hardware cloth I could find and wrapped the kennel in that. I did not wrap the top though. (i realize that was a mistake now).

So this morning when I checked on them the other 3 were dead. One ( the white one) is missing except part of head and one wing. The other two were dead in the box too. They looked mauled but whole. We did find black feathers in a pile on the porch a few feet away which came from the black chicken inside the kennel.

What has done this? A rat? a snake?

    Thanks for any help.

I'm thinking rat or weasel or something that could fit thru the bars. Sorry

Sounds like a raccoon to me. Hawks aren't real well known for reaching in and and pulling a victim out. Raccoons are very well know for it and they DO hunt day and night.

I dont think a hawk got them. the chicks were inside a smaller box than the kennel. The box was inside the kennel so nothing could reach in and get them.

the dog kennel has bars all the way around including the top. The holes in the kennel are about 1 inch by 4 inch rectangles all over. and has hardware cloth all over except the top.

So could a weasel squeeze through a 1 inch hole? Sorry I know nothing about weasels.

And I know a racoon could not squeeze through that and kill the chicks and then leave. Two of the chicks were mauled inside the box inside the kennel.

Quote:Recommended mesh size to exclude weasels, rodents, and snakes big enough to cause damage is 0.5 " a 1" by 4" slot is way too big.

Raccoons will reach through that 1" by 4" as well.
