    Hugging a Chicken
This is my story and you may not copy it or show it as your own. It was written by AnimalsComeFirst.

“Mom, why can’t I have a dog? I do my chores and homework… I can care for a dog!” I asked my mom thoughtfully. “Ben, you know why we can’t have a pet! I know you’re old enough to care for one… you’re 10 years old. But you go to school all day and your Dad and I work. A dog would have no one to pet him or feed him, or walk him.” Mom said as she stroked my short, brown hair. Tears filled my eyes, as they always do when we have this exact conversation, and I pouted as I glared at the ground. I ran to my room upstairs and flopped on my bed. I thought about what I could do if I could get a dog. In the summertime I was always home, doing nothing. I didn’t have many friends, so summertime to me, was doing nothing but reading. But when I did have school, I would be gone all day, like Mom said. What if he could stay in our backyard all day? He could have a doghouse, with a water bowl and a food bowl. I could leave out toys… and he could run around all he wanted! That was it! That was my plan. Now I just needed the doghouse, the bowls, the toys and… a dog. It was going to be hard to sneak this all past my parents, but I had to try. I peeked out my bedroom door and quietly slipped down the stairs. “Mom, I’m heading out to town!” I yelled to her as I opened the front door and a blast of warm air hit my face. “Be back before dinner!” She called back, but I was already running down the road, counting my allowance to see what I could buy for my dog.

    Anyone want more??

This one is great BTW! [IMG] But I won't read it (sorry, [IMG] ) for two reasons:

I read 'Where the red fern grows' 6 times.

I won't have much time to, [IMG]

"Can I help you, young man?" A women asked me from behind the counter. I shook my head and continued to walk along the aisles. I passed about 10 aisles or different things before I came to the pet section. Our local market had everything... food, tools, appliances... anything! I peered at the many dog toys, food, beds and collars... wondering how I was going to afford all this. I counted my money and said aloud to myself, "Only 6 dollars." "What you plan on buying, boy?" A gruff voice asked me from behind. I jumped and turned around to see a old man, about 50 years old, standing there. "I...um, I am looking for supplies for my dog." I stammered quickly. "Ha! Well that won't buy you a meer bag of kibble. Ya'll have a job?" He asked. "No. I am only spending my allowance." I said. He looked thoughtfully at me, then offered "How would you like to have a job? I need some fixing up 'round my ranch. Got myself a dog, horses and some chickens that need caring for. The house needs 'paintin and a few other jobs..... so, what do 'ya say, sonny?" I stared at him in shock, then nodded my head. "I live down by the old bridge, right before town. 9 o'clock tomorrow morning, sharp." He told me, then walked away. I bought what i could with the 6 dollars, which was only a can of dog food, then went to pay. "Ben! I didn't know your mother got you a dog." the lady at the register exclaimed when she saw the can of dog food. "I.... um... this is for a friend." I said quickly. "Ah, I see." The lady said, then gave me my change. I ran out the door while stuffing the money in my pocket. Suddenly a clatter went out as my money landed on the ground, after falling from a hole in my pocket. I knelt down and started to gather it up when a voice said, "Ben! What are you doing here?"

"Oh... hi Dad...." I said with a slight smile. My Dad was a tall man with brown hair and brown eyes, he was a carpenter and worked at a shop down the road; he made sheds, chests, tables, chairs, fences and anything you could think of. He was slim but had muscles on his arms. He had a brown mushtache that curved along his lip, and usually looked like he had 2 smiling lips. But now he was frowning as he looked at the bag in my hand and then at the money on the ground, then looked into my face. "Ben.. what are you doing?" He asked again. "I... I picked up some... some beans that we can cook for dinner." I said slowly. His frown disappeared and his friendly smile spread across his face as he exclaimed, "Thats wonderful, Ben! I'm so glad you're helping out by buying food and not wasting it on candy or useless toys. Want to walk home with me?" I shook my head and said, "I... I can't. I.... I have to go back to the market because... I want to buy a apple... for breakfast tomorrow!" "'K, I'll meet you home, then! See you!" My father called to me as he walked away at a brisk pace towards our house. Most of the town people walked on the roads, because it was a rare sight to see a car in our little town. Most people lived so close that they could walk or ride a bike, so road safety was not thought of often. Breathing a sigh of relief, I turned back and bought a can of beans and a apple; which I really didn't want but had to keep my white lie true to its words. I ran down the road, eager to get home before dark. It was atleast 8 o clock, but it wasn't dark because of the summer hours approaching. I quietly slipped through my front door and closed it with a click, then tip toed up the stairs. "Benjamin Brown, you get down here right now!" I heard Mom yell angrily from the kitchen.
