Aloha All! I’ve been researching various things on BYC since the beginning of the pandemic when I first started my chicken adventure. I was in California at that time, helping my elderly parents. We started with a flock of 5 Golden Commet pullets that were just a few weeks away from laying. I made a beautiful environment for those girls. I fell in love with my new chicken hobby and was hooked. It was then that I became a full-fledged chicken mama.
Today I officially joined as a member and I am happy to be a part of this community.
I live on Kauai and started my own flock in March of 2021, after a Black Australorp hen literally showed up on my front lawn with her 9 solid black chicks!!! I live just steps from a park and had been eyeing this beautiful black hen from my window for several weeks. As many of you may know, we have MANY feral chickens running all around our island, but seeing this purebred hen walking around our park was unusual. I wanted her even back then, but I wasn’t prepared at the time. I didn’t have a coop or anything as the first flock I took care of was in my parent’s backyard on the mainland. Plus, I wanted to make sure this hen didn’t belong to anyone nearby. When she landed in my front yard a couple months later with all of her babies, I feverishly started gathering all of the things I needed to make a happy home for them! I continue to make their Hen Heaven a little more beautiful with every passing day.
