I got the silkies as day-olds from MPC three and a half weeks ago. The four babies are ten days old. I put them together in the same brooder four days ago. The silkies immediately chose their babies and have taken care of them ever since.

Here is Big Mac in his hat while Blue Mama hovers over him.

I just did the same thing - sort of - we hatched 4 chicks this past weekend, and as an experiment, I let my 12 week old Silkie pullet (that we also hatched ourselves) get in the brooder. I have always heard that Silkies make great mothers, so i wanted to see what she would do - she is so young i didnt know if she would have motherly instincts yet. Sure enough, she sat right down and the runt crawled right under her; the other three soon followed. I didn't let her stay the night in the brooder, but i let her get in again this morning, and she spent the whole day in there with them. I have pictures, but ill have to post them when i get home from work. its the most adorable thing i have ever seen!

So....here's Liza and her adopted babies. Like I said, there are 4 of them, and theyre all in there somewhere (She's barely big enough to cover them all). I never would have tried this with any of my other hens; I just had a feeling Liza would be a natural.........

That's amazing! When I let my Silkie brood 3 eggs this summer, she killed the first chick that hatched, so I immediately took the two other eggs away and let another broody hen hatch and care for them.
