Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

That could be a possibility. She is one of my original hens and bw, w and splash was a possibility when they hatched. I've never gotten a bw chick from her when bred with a w cockeral so I assumed she was wheaten because of the black. But her tail is awefully clear for a wheaten.

If she was blue wheaten or splash wheaten she would not have any black at all. She is wheaten. Like I said- she migth haqve other qualities worth keeping her in the flock though. Hard to tell from just those pics. The only reason I have had to really pull hens is because they are clean-faced, and even then they are perfect for making olive eggers.

Chris, after MUCH comparison, I chose the Canon 7D. One of the sites you might want to look at is www.dpvreview.com . There you can do a side-by-side comparison of like 5 cameras at one time. I also chose the Canon 50mm 1.4 regular lense, Tamron Di VC USD 70-300, Tamron Di II 60mm Macro, Nissin 860 Mark II Flash, and a bunch of other stuff.

God Bless,

I agree with both. She's Wheaten and I wouldn't be culling her just for lack of color in tail alone. If you haven't done it already, I would recommend choosing 1 (or 2 at the most) attributes to work on. Breed your birds until those attributes are set. Then move on to 1 or 2 more. You may already know this but always work on Type before Color. Like the Old Timer's say, "Build the barn and then paint it."

I would also recommend reading up on the various types of breeding programs if you haven't done so. There are pro's and con's to each but some are defintely going to achieve faster results than others. I recommend those that lean towards Line Breeding and definitely require not only each bird be identified so subsequent chicks can be pedigreed but also that meticulous records be kept.

(I'm curious to hear what you think of the Tamron zoom lens and how it performs with the Canon 7D.)

BarnGoddess, I'll try to remember to let you know. Even better, I'll try to post some pics soon as well having used it. It will be impossible for me to tell you much as far as a comparison though because I only got the one lense and don't have a Canon to compare it to. However if you go to the site I mentioned above, you can read an abundance of feedback from those who are into photography a whole lot more than I am and from those who have compared the two side-by-side. I actually chose the Tamron because the majority of folks said the Tamron outperformed the Canon and when you combine that with the fact the Canon is $200 more, it was a no brainer.

God Bless,

I have a question... I have 3 grown Lav Roos to pick from. All are very similar since they are brothers (all from Shaffer eggs) I have a small med and Jumbo boys. Who should I keep? The jumbo is really big is that a great thing in AM or not?

Here are some pics, the jumbo boy is bullied by the Med brother and stays in the coop most of the time so maybe that is why he is jumbo... no exercise

I don't have the best pics of him. And if you see some girls that are GREAT let me know. I don't know if I can pick them out again but we can try

This is the smaller boy and he is a lot smaller than the other two. I am keeping both of those girls and they will be my Black AM breeders and I have a great roo for them.

This is the med boy, he is a poser too

Now these are not great of Jumbo when he comes down from the coop or the perch he gets attacked... I need to put him by himself to get better pics.

Group shot (I am keeping the Lav Pullet and 1 Lav Roo and 1 black pullet from this group so if you see a good black from this pic let me know)

I have 2 lav split pullets/2 Lav Pullets and a Little Lav roo growing up in another pen and 17 + eggs in the incubator with lav splits I should have some to pick from to improve the Lavs

BE KIND... this is what I have to work with and I want to improve on these so all help is appreciated.

Thanks

DMRIPPY,
Look at their combs, feathering, tail carriage, coloring and size to decide which two to keep since you always want to keep two roosters incase of the unexpectancies. You will understand that very well if you only keep one and their is an accident and now you have no rooster. Try and buy a good rooster when you need to replace the only one you had that is no longer around. Good luck this season and hatch all your eggs you can since the ratio is generally 1:10 for replacement stock.
