Is this a breed that is generally okay with small animals? I know it really depends on the dog and how you train it but I'm curious of people's experiences and if anyone has an Eskie that has a high prey drive, particularly with cats?

I have limited experiences with them, and I have to say I am not impressed. The few I've met and worked with have been unpredictable, one second fawning on you and soaking up the lovins, the next snapping at your face! I don't know how they are with small animals, but I personally have never met one I would trust with a child. As for prey drive, they are a spitz type, and I would assume they probably have the typical northern breed/spitz prey drive. But their owners do seem terribly devoted to them, so I assume they must have some good qualities as well.

I wonder if it just has to do with poor training/not enough exercise or something?

yeah, that's what I'm afraid of with the prey drive thing...
