Ammonia for snakes?

I was talking to the game comission about my snake problem (it's actually in my attic... but I'm just waiting for them to discover the eggs in the coop

). He said to put ammonia in a pan and set where they are hanging out. He said that the smell from it will drive their olfactory galnds crazy and they will have to leave.
I've been trying everything I can for years to keep the (black rat) snakes out of my home, but have never heard of this. Has anyone ever tried it or heard of it?

They say snakes hate the smell of moth balls. The smell of camphor is a deterrent to snakes.
