I rearranged the coop the other night and gave my 7 old banty chicks (6 weeks old) a new place to roost. I closed the door and watched from outside to see if they were going to use it. Three of the regular feathered chicks figured it out and settled in on their roost. The other four, two of them silkies, huddled together on the ground. One of the E-e chicks obviously wanted a warmer spot and tried snuggling under one silkie. To my surprise, the silkie stood up, spread her wings and covered both regular feathered chicks with her wings! It was SO cute, and she's obvously got the maternal instinct!
(Just fyi...they DO have a heat lamp, should they choose to go under it
