Hi guys! I've enjoyed reading through y'all's threads and I've gotten a lot of good info. And now I'm glad to finally have my own ducks to post about! I got 10 appleyard ducklings and 4 anconas. The woman I bought them from didn't know how to tell them apart but said her husband looks at their feet to determine what they are. They mostly look similar to me. Any tell tale signs? Or do I just need to wait? I don't even know if they're gals/guys so I have to wait for that too!

Oh wow - Ancona and Appleyard ducklings should look fairly different. A good breeder should know one from the other quickly.

Depending on how pure the lines are- and ancona duckling should be yellow with irregular dark markings.

The appleyard ducklings should be basically yellow with darker shading on the head and tail rather than the " spots" an Ancona would display.

I hope you got what you paid for and are happy with your ducklings when they are fully grown.

Thank you. I had guessed that the spotted ones were anconas since I finally noticed that difference in four of them but I'm glad to know that's right. I came and picked them up from a couple when the lady's husband was unavailable and he's the duck expert while she raises chickens. I hope I'm happy with them too!

the ancona duckling should also be smaller and more leaner

unless u are dealing with minature appleyards you should have some very diiffrent sized ducklings since anconas are in the light weight class and appleyards are heavy weight

Awesome u could join us at BYC
