Yesterday we picked up our first chicks, three buff orpingtons. Spent yesterday being concerned it was too hot, too cold, they weren't eating enough, weren't drinking enough and generally overthinking and worrying! They're freaking adorable šŸ˜ƒ

They ARE freaking adorable!!
Do you have the coop built?
I love how airy your brooder is and the plate or a MHP (or an actual momma hen!) are the only ways to go IMO.

The coop is almost finished! We've pretty much finished remodeling the actual coop (with recommendations from people on here) but are still working on their area in the yard. Should be completely ready to go in a couple of weeks, weather permitting. There is a back up plan just in case!

Wonderful!
How about some pictures of your coop project?

This is the thread on the coop. We've opened up one of the sides, as recommended, and will be putting up hardware cloth. Still working out quite what the roosts will look like in this. We've definitely accepted that we'll be building a bigger, custom coop soon.

As for the yard, most of our yard is a hill. We're leveling out an area to put the coop that fulfills township requirements on distance from house without it being a pain to get to in the winter. Here is a progress picture from a couple of weeks ago. It's all leveled out now and drainage seems to be working well.
