I have 11 chicks (ranging in age from 3+ weeks to over 5 weeks) and I noticed that when they seem startled that 8 of them run into a corner together while the other three hang by the feeder looking around with their tail feathers up. Could this indicate that I have 8 pullets and 3 cockarels? I am new to raising chickens so any help is greatly appreciated!

It sounds like some are better friends than the others! Chickens have cliques just like people do. It's just like being in high school again watching them! [IMG]

Do you all have any ideas if they are pullets or cockarels? Or if they are a different breed than what I was told? Thank you!

Too young to tell their genders. Wait until they're around 4 to 5 months old.

Thanks for the response. I have another question though . . . the bird in the first 2 pics doesn't have any tail feathers and she is 4 weeks old already. My guess is that she is a Welsummer, but I have looked at Welsummer's at 2 weeks and they have tails. She and the other one I have just like her have no tail feathers and not even the beginning of them. Is this normal? Or is there a possibility they are another breed?

Um, sometimes it just takes longer for some chicks to grow tail feathers. [IMG]
