OK OK, since everyone was TWISTING my ARM about candling again (lol by everyone, I mean ME), here are the results!

Sadly, I don’t think Sophie made it. No veining, just a dark blob in the egg. You guys let me know your thoughts before I pull it, but it looks significantly different than the others. 😢

I have video footage of Lainey’s feet which was awesome and Billy the kid was kicking too. I saw movement in all but Sophie. I’m sorry, @SunriseChickers 😢 I will probably do an eggtopsy later, but that egg was more porous than the others so I’m wondering if that played a part.
Yas queen keep on kickin' in your Lil cowgirl boots, Lainey!! Awesome pics @tviss711! Sorry about poor little Sophie.
😢

Amazing how much they have grown! Is there any hope for Sophie?

Also those videos are super cool. Lasso was very wiggly! Keep on growing lil Lasso!

Unfortunately I think she quit, probably yesterday or the day before. I will candle once more before pulling it to verify, but the absence of veining usually indicates death. She looks much different than even day 7, where there was lots of healthy veining.

I’ll probably post a thread about it once I do the eggtopsy, as I’m trying to learn as much as I can to improve future hatching and learn what could have gone wrong. I have a feeling the shell was too porous which could have allowed bacteria in more readily, but there are so many things that can go wrong for these little guys it’s hard to tell sometimes.

Well, I did an eggtopsy on Sophie after confirming she had quit. It was really sad for me. I don’t know that I could truly determine the cause, but I do think it had something to do with the porosity of the egg. I wondered on day 7 when I had candled, as I had noticed it was a lot more porous than the others. She was developing then, so I figured she’d be okay. Perhaps it was bacteria. The egg when I opened it didn’t have an odor, so that was good I guess. I think she quit a few days ago, her legs had formed but not really her toes. I could see toes on all the embryos today so my guess is that she quit somewhere around day 9.

I did the eggtopsy with my niece who lives with us (she’s 13), and it was a somber, but fascinating learning experience for us both. She was amazed to see her tiny little wings and legs, her big eyes, and the beginnings of her little beak. We were sad to have lost her, but I’m thankful the other 12 seem to be developing really nicely so far. I sure hope the remaining eggs make it to hatch day!

Not all embryos continue to grow, with no fault on your part. Nature is just this way. :hugs
