Hi everyone. We got 2 muscovy ducks today to add to our flock of 2 black swedish ducks (you may remember my post from July about free ranging my flock). The muscovies, according to the farmer, are about 3 months old. He believes they're both female, but he even said "you don't know for sure until they're either crowing or laying eggs" (making a joke about chickens/roosters). So I'd like to posit this to you folks with some pictures attached.
Some extra descriptions to help:
- Both are doing very clear, very frequent trilling (female trait?)
- they have large fan-like tail feathers (male trait?)
- Caruncles are mostly undeveloped, just a small ring around their faces, no warty bits yet(female trait?)
- both are same size (so they must be same sex IMO)
I want to believe they're definitely female. Any thoughts?
