My Coop
My Coop
Hi All!
Just wanted to pop in and introduce myself! Lucky me, my town recently changed their bylaws so that now I can have up to 6 chickens in my yard! I have always loved chickens! In 8th grade, my science fair project was to hatch one, and also talk about the development of the chicken. Got into the local newspaper, won an award, and had lots of fond memories of that chicken! Unfortunately, my kitty at the time...ummm....well, that cutie chick went to the coop in the sky. So, here I am, years later and I can finally indulge in a real coop! I have been doing a lot of research, reading, and coop planning and will be breaking ground on the coop tomorrow. Looking to have RI Reds and Barred Rocks, since I live in an area that gets chilly. If anyone has any special information on those 2 breeds, I would love input, or anything else you might want to add! :)

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2 on check out the BYC Learning Center TwoCrows gave you the link to, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping. And it is always fun to check out your state thread for chicken keeping neighbors and if they have any hints for dealing with your weather https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread
With the two breeds you mention, they are both quite popular, check out the member reviews on them https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/plymouth-rock and www.backyardchickens.com/products/rhode-island/reviews and they both have Breed threads on them https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/273471/plymouth-rock-thread and https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/407294/the-heritage-rhode-island-red-site one point, RIR are one of those breeds where there is a big difference between hatchery birds and birds you get from heritage or show breeders... the hatchery birds, which some people call production reds also, tend to be smaller, lighter/redder in color, not as broody, but probably better layers.
