We have a chicken with an impacted crop. I'm planning on doing the surgery mentioned here later today as the hen seems to be on her last legs. Can anyone tell me how long the incision needs to be? And is there someplace I can get an antibiotic without going to the vet?

Never mind. I checked her and she was dead. I cut the crop open and it was full of straw. We feel so stupid, it never occured to us that they would eat it. Dh is cleaning out the stall now.

Hi Andrea, I'm so sorry you lost her. I'd been going through the same thing recently and received some suggestions from three *very* experiened owners and got my hen through. I'll give you the link so that you can see what we tried. Look for Incident 03, on this page
