Chick was born on August 7th so 5.5 weeks old. Not super thrilled about being held but mama is ready to pass off "blanket" duty. I think she is wanting to start her mild as it is getting very cold here. My 5 month old Brahma pullet is happy enough to snuggle though so chicky has a space heater.

Free standing work? This is literally the first time it has been held since it was 3 days old?
Yes, posture and seeing how each characteristic fits together in the whole bird are part of the gender assessment. It can help to work in a confined area and let the bird wander, snapping photos or set a bait station (food) to catch their attention or use a small area with three sides (cut down cardboard box) and shoot from the open side

Sorry this took so long to get back to. Life attacked.

So I will say that this little thing can puff up "her" feathers really big. The flock has accepted it to the point if I've seen the dominant cockerel take after the cats for getting too close. It needs to be more careful who it trys to snuggle with on the roosts but my hens are still molting so they aren't exactly in the best moods.
