Well we started breeding quail and we started with 10 Coturnix brown and they all looked pretty much identical - they grew up and I have some breeders and there isn’t much color variation they all seem pretty much the same to me.
However, I had a small batch of eggs hatch a week or so ago, maybe 2 weeks now, and I noticed one had a black face well maybe not entire face just part of it - he didn’t look like the others!
So I’ve been waiting and now he looks even more different! It almost seems like his side feathers below the head are in reverse - Black with white scallop edge.
This is the only one I have like this. He also seems a bit more orange or red. He came from my own stock of Brown Coturnix.
First pic is very early on, the rest are from today.
Is he a bit of a mutant color or something? I’ve searched all over I can’t find anything I mean there is a million and one color variations so it’s a bit hard to research it.
Just curious what anyone else thinks of him? I think he’s adorable and gorgeous color with the black and white scallop feather pattern.
One of the pictures he is sleeping in his food bowl with a buddy. They are all so so so sweet. They are around people nearly 24/7 for now in my office. They get a ton of love lol I have 4 hens too but I think the quail have won my heart, same with my husband, we love our backyard hens but the quails are just I don’t know I can’t explain it they steal your heart and run away with it.
I have some Texas A&Ms in my Hovabator at the moment and 12 California Valley, waiting on another batch of Coturnix as well (any minute... any minute.... The ONLY adults I have right now are the Brown Coturnix - the other eggs are from other people.
Thanks!
