Does anyone know if Welsummer chicks are easy to sex?

Generally the females are darker than the males. The female also has a more distinct stripe on it's head while the male's head looks more like a blur.

the brown chicks with the chipmunk stripes in this picture are welsummer chicks. There was a thread this past week about sexing them.[IMG]

These just hatched three days ago. The girl is in the front with the defined stripe on head and the boy is in back with almost no stripe on head. The girls also have more of a true brown color to them and defined stripe all the way down their back. And the boys have a more golden brown color with a blurry stripe and no black outline to it.

Now the disclaimer!! This is my first time with Welsummers and so I am going off of what everyone else says. Although I can say, the ones I think are boys stand up taller and are more assertive and even have teensy bit bigger comb, so I think there is a lot of corroberating (sp) evidence that they are boys.

    Hope this helps!

EWWWW icky bottom of the brooder, just woke up and jumped on here before cleaning cages, sorry (embarrassed smilie!)

What cute pictures! Thank you. Now I feel confident I will be able to sex my Welsummer chicks. Of course I need to get my eggs first. [IMG]

Does this mean I have a welsummer? I was hoping I guessed correctly at the store. They had about 7 varieties in the tube and I only managed to completely rule out Buff Orphington.

Sorry but I have to say you really can not sex Welsummers by their stripes or how dark or light they may be. I've had both sexes go opposite ways.

Combs are a good lead indicator of cockerals and pullets after a month old or sooner if they get redder than the others.
