We have several young hens we got as peeps in April. A few have started laying and I'm anxious to let them out to free range. I thought I read somewhere that they should be penned until they lay so they know where the coop is.
Is there any truth to that and if so, do you think they are old enough now to be set free.
  2. I free range mine as chicks after a couple weeks old. It your objective is to free range they were ready months ago. You'll need to provide protection as best you can. Cover is paramount.

    Wish ya the best.

    Free ranger for life.

If they've been in the coop long enough, then they should be fine. My newbies usually stay in the coop about a week before being let outside. As for my layers, they range all day and come back to their nest boxes to lay their eggs. (with the exception of my BR hen who insists on laying her egg on my workbench in the garage for some reason!.) So would say they're ready! [IMG]
