MY mother was on welfar when she first left her abusive husband with two young children in tow. She worked hard and went to school And got a double bachelors while being a single mother. we lived in a car and in shelters. Welfar does NOT pay well. It did how ever give her the hand she needed to get set up. My mother broke the cycle of poverty and abuse that so many women in the older generations hsa no choice but to endure. She had no living family near, no friends because he kept her isolated. She would not have been able to do it without assistance. So many people see the abusers in a program and assume everyone does it, when in fact for every abuser, there are many more who are not abusing the system.
