Just wondering out of curiosity...how many of you have bought pullets (yes, actually advertised as pullets) only to have some or as many as half suddenly start crowing? I know it's hard to tell the sex on some of them, but shouldn't places be a little more sure before advertising them as "layers"? Once we bought 8 pullets and 4 ended up being roosters. This has happened since, too.
I bought 6 chickens from the "Assorted Pullets" bin at TSC. 5 have turned out to be roosters. I had a friend who bought 7 from the same bin and same store; 5 out of the 7 were roos.
That's where my 4 out of 8 came from and I had a friend get a dozen from there this year and has only 3 hens. I bought 6 from a feed store this past spring, 4 aracaunas and at least 2 out of the 4 were roos (1 died and I'm not sure what it was). The roo, though was a bit of a late bloomer and I didn't clue in until one day I heard one of my "hens" (as I didn't have any roosters) crowing. Imagine my surprise!
