Hello!
My family picked up our first batch of 12 chicks today. We bought Plymouth Rocks because apparently they are great for laying and family friendly. I really want a breed that will be enjoyable additions to our family. I am also interested in purchasing light Sussex chicks but there are no local sellers in Tucson. Does anyone know of a good place to buy on-line? And has anyone who lives in the heat (105 and up) have other suggestions for friendly hens for laying eggs?

Some background about me: I am a city girl (from Edmonton to San Francisco to Casper, WY to Raleigh, NC to Tucson). I homeschool my youngest two boys and I love to paint, play the piano, and read.

:welcome Glad you joined us. You may want to edit your profile by adding your location. There are several hatcheries online you can check out, also check your local CraigsListing and ask at your feed store.

Hopefully you have your coop and run built, chicks do grow fast.

EDITED: Orpingtons are GREAT family birds & lay nice eggs

Hi, welcome to BYC:welcome

I live in Florida where it can get reaaallyy hot:mad:, so I give my birds frozen fruit and put ice in their water. I also let them free range in the woods to cool them down.

If you want a family bird that is a consistent layer, I would go for a buff Orpington. They are really mild mannered and sweet.:thumbsup

Hi, I am a newbie here. Currently I have one hen in my backyard and am looking to add one more. If anyone has a baby silkie hen, please let me know. I live in Tempe, Arizona.
Hello, welcome to Backyard Chickens! :frow I would recommend starting a new introduction thread if you haven't yet. Here is a link to the Arizona state thread. You can ask members in your area if they have any silkies.

Craigslist is a good site to search for any chicken breeds you are interested in as well.
