I have a few day old chicks. I have been keeping the group of 15 live ones out of 25. I am new to the chicken thing. I have been reading and reading. I got them in the mail on Tuesday. I have been keeping an eye on them. I find it hard to do anything other then look at them. But on my last check I see a sleeping chick. Well still not sure if it is sleep as I am new. So I wake them up. But this guy is standing funny. I look at his leg and it is dark colored. I do not know what to do. Any help would be great. Thanks

Only one leg has a distinct color? How is this chick behaving now?

It's hard to say without seeing a pic or observing directly- could be an injury in transit, though.

Am I correct in assuming only 15 were alive out of 25? That's terrible.

Well I do not think it was me. 4 where dead before I got them at the post office. I have them at mostly 90 but a cooler spot for them to get in.
Tmight think it is sleep time. But it is laying down. I can try to get a pic or let him sleep what do you think?
It is just one lag and it does not want to stand on that leg. But it is a different from the foot to the calf.. well if they have a calf.

It sounds like these chicks were damaged in transit.

    What a shame.

This little one may have impaired circulation due to a damaged leg.

At the very least these birds will need electrolytes and the one you mention should be segregated so he can rest. Do you have a little piece of 2x4 he can use to stay slightly out of the bedding? They like that, and it gives you a better chance to observe how he moves. A pic will help, send it along later if he is resting.

So, everyone else is eating and drinking?

chicks sleep a lot. They will just plop down and sleep in whatever position. Your chick sounds like it might have an injury. Have you picked it up and felt the leg, to see if it is broken?
