At what age do black australorps pullets get redness in their comb

I have 4 Australorps and 3 of them still have no color in their comb they are 18 weeks old . One of them does but pretty sure he is a roo. They are my first australorps so I’m very curious about them very different from others that I have had in the past .

Photos would be helpful. Australorps have single combs and you can often tell by 6 to 8 weeks which ones are male and which ones are female. Sometimes pullets don’t get redness in their comb until just before they start to lay. Yours that does is probably a female that is going to lay eggs soon.

This may be true of some breeds, but most chickens with single combs you can tell the males by 6 to 8 weeks, not months, when the comb gets red and wattles form. They can even start crowing this young.

I uploaded some pictures, I’m also curious to why the one that I think is a roo is almost half the size of my girls . He is very skittish and won’t free range like my girls . I thought he be bigger and a lot more brave lol

My Australorp pullets start getting red as they approach point-of-lay between 18-20 weeks roughly.

Cockerels can start getting colored combs and crowing as young as month. Typically 8 weeks is the age you can tell the boys by combs.

I knew my Blue Australorp was a roo at 3 weeks when his comb popped up. His wattles came a week later. He crowed last week at 10 weeks. My 7 older girls are not enjoying him. Straight combs are usually easy.

They won’t get red until right before they lay usually which for big heritage type breeds like Australorps or Barred Rocks, etc. can be closer to 24 weeks or sometimes later. As opposed to ones bred for high egg production like Sex links and leghorns, those are usually the ones starting at 18 weeks. So yours may still have a bit to go. But it depends on the birds. Some start early and some start late.
